Thank goodness its friday! I'm very excited that tomorrow is the weekend. University is beginning to stress me out! Gah. Aaaand Friday means that its time for Book Club! I'm linking up with Heather at Blonde Undercover Blonde.
I'm a little embarrassed about what I read this week. I swore to myself I wasn't going to read it, then I just couldn't help myself... luckily I got my flatmate onto it too, so we could discuss the extreme awkwardness together!
50 Shades of Grey by E L James
Synopsis via Amazon
When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.
Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success—his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family—Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.
Erotic, amusing, and deeply moving, the Fifty Shades Trilogy is a tale that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever.

My Thoughts
I, uh, erm, whaaaaat?! I honestly don't even know what to say about this book... I have to admit it is gripping, you do want to keep reading and find out what, if anything, is going to happen. And I do like the way James uses Ana's "inner goddess" to describe her feelings etc. its quite well done.
However I have a lot of issues with it. Its not greatly written, but I can forgive it for that, it doesn't really set out to be a literature masterpiece. The main issue I have is that there's no clear plot. Its basically girl, meets boy, girl falls for boy, they have a lot of ridiculously graphic and un-necessary sex. The end. The sex is just so... non-stop. Honestly, there is too much, I would finish awkwardly reading one sex scene and get ready for some more plot development, but no... they just move to a different room and have graphic sex again. Ugh.
I'm yet to read the second one, but unless there's a lot more plot and less sex I doubt I will read the third. There's only so much kinky, descriptive sex a girl can read! All in all a little under-whelmed...

I read the whole series and the second was my favorite one, I mean, if you can have a favorite erotica novel... Love the blog, I'll def be your newest follower!
I'm going to give the second one a go!! We shall see. And thanks so much!! I love meeting new followers :D
I have this on my list to read but it keeps getting bumped down. I'm mostly interested in reading it so I can know what people are talking about but it just can't seem to reach the top of the pile. I'm all for sexy-times but agree that, without a plot, a book doesn't really have much to offer. That being said, if the second one is better... :)
I will keep you posted and will definitely review the second one! It better be better!
I'm still on the fence on this .... I read a review and think ok, I really should go buy it and then I read another review and I think : ugh I'm just going to get so bored with it ....
I definitely didn't get bored but I did get frustrated with it sometimes. Its worth giving it a go though :D
I think you have a point, and its also why the first one was MY personal favorite. I didn't like the plot a whole lot (or, at least, it could use some work), but I definitely read it for the erotica, which she did well. Once that dropped off in the 2nd and 3rd books, I kind of lost interest.
ahhh i know what you mean. i said i wasn't going to read it and off i went to go get the entire series. its a little disturbing and actually doesn't have a true unique plot anyways...i've read the 2nd one (and almost finished) and it has about 4 plots going on. I'm curious as to what the 3rd one may be. xo
I had some issues similar to yours with the first book but the second is so much better. There is a lot more plot and its seriously addicting!
I love the way you described this book. It's spot on! I found the second book to be much better, it had less of the constant sex!
I'm with you- I didn't know what to think after I finished it! haha I wanted to like it but it wasn't written very well and it was just a lot of random sex scenes and no plot. I don't get the hype, I just couldn't get into it!
Hope you have a great Memorial Day weekend!
hahaha and that is why i have NO desire to read this book/series ever. :)
cute blog you have!
happy weekend!
Well, I think you're right insofar as the first book is mainly just about the sex, but hang in there, the other 2 have more substance :)
I didn't love the book, but I liked the story... a little bit? I could have done without the bdsm stuff, but it is what it is! I'm probably going to read the 2nd one just because so many people say it's their favorite one!
Thanks so much! I felt like I had to read it to be in the loop haha. And its not as bad as I thought it would be but still not great...
Me too! I have heard theres more plot stuff and less sex haha. Fingers crossed!
I'm definitely willing to give it a go!
I didn't know what to think either! My flatmate and I finished at the same time and were just like "whaaaat? what just happened?!" crazy!
Haha thanks! I think the constant sex was my main issue. It didn't leave much room for plot or character development :/
That's what I hear. I'm definitely looking forward to it!
Yea thats always a good point. The erotica seemed to be the most well written parts which is crazy! The crappy writing might shine through in the next ones...
That sounds a bit more interesting!! I tried not to read them but I wanted to be in the loop haha. Book peer pressure!
I haven't read them yet, but I did finally pick them up. So I have a feeling my post next week is going to be all about 50 shades.
My next 2 reviews will probably be the sequels! They definitely hook you in somehow
I like your review of it..and now I must go buy books 2 and 3. I don't know why I liked the book so much, maybe because I could relate to Ana up until chapter 8 happened.
It definitely is an attention grabber to me, ha ha. Have a great week girl!
I'm currently reading number 3 so obviously it got something right!
I read the first one and stopped there...I wasn't impressed...
